The sequel to a warmly-received economic strategy game by 11 bit studios. Frostpunk 2 is set thirty years after the first game. We play as the leader of a settlement trying to survive in a frozen world. This time we operate on a larger scale and rely on oil instead of coal.

Frostpunk 2 Review: An Example That Risk Pays Off
Frostpunk 2 is both a sequel and a new start for the franchise. Despite my concerns, this marriage turned out great.

Frostpunk 2 has a specific way of making you feel urgency, all the time. The stress I felt when the death and illness count was rising in my city was beyond terrifying. Knowing your city is on the brink of collapse isn’t the end through. There is a reward for playing again. You start a new game now knowing the outcome of your actions. It helps you become a better leader and this is reward enough. I will absolutely be playing more of this game. I won’t be surprised if I beat my record time spent on Frostpunk with this one!
MMORPG.com: 8.5 / 10 by Christopher Hutton
The original Frostpunk presented players with a simple puzzle: what are you willing to do as a society to survive the apocalypse? Its mechanics explored this magnificently, presenting us with challenges and ideas that made us second-guess what we’d do at the end of the world. Frostpunk 2 furthers that struggle by asking, “What are we willing to do to thrive?” Will we rely wholly on technology to save us, or adapt to the brutal cold and make nature our guide? Will we be the same leader we started as at the launch of the campaign? Every player will be faced with that moral conundrum, and will have to decide what it is they value most to reach the end of that journey.
New Game Network: 72 / 100 by Alex Varankou
Frostpunk 2 isn't afraid to shake things up and bring a different kind of experience to the franchise, although that new design philosophy leaves a bit more to be desired in mechanics, UI and narrative elements.
The main pros of the game
- Visuals and Atmosphere: Many players praised the graphics, art style, and music, noting that the game creates a beautiful and immersive environment.
- Expanded Mechanics: The game introduces new mechanics such as political systems, faction management, and a larger scale of city building, which some players found engaging and innovative.
- Complexity and Challenge: Players appreciated the complexity of managing resources and political relationships, which they found to add depth to the gameplay.
- Engaging Story and Lore: The continuation of the story from the first game and the lore surrounding the new setting were highlighted as positive aspects.
- Replayability: Some users mentioned that the game offers a variety of ways to approach scenarios and challenges, enhancing replayability.
The main cons of the game
- Loss of Intimacy: Many players felt that the personal connection to individual citizens from the first game was lost. The larger scale made deaths feel less impactful and the gameplay more impersonal.
- UI and Gameplay Issues: Several reviews pointed out problems with the user interface, stating that it was not intuitive and sometimes confusing, leading to frustration during gameplay.
- Performance Problems: Some users reported bugs and performance issues, particularly with loading times and frame rate drops during certain actions or menus.
- Simplified Mechanics: Critics noted that some mechanics from the first game were simplified or removed, making the gameplay feel less engaging and dynamic.
- Pacing and Structure: The pacing of the game and the structure of its scenarios were criticized, with some players feeling that it lacked the tension and urgency present in the first game.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Micro-Management: Players missed the micro-management aspects of the first game, such as the detailed management of individual buildings and citizens.
- Emotional Weight: There was a general sentiment that the emotional weight of decisions and their consequences was diminished in the sequel.
- Diverse Scenarios: Many users expressed a desire for more varied scenarios similar to those in the first game, instead of a single lengthy campaign.
- Clearer Tutorials and Guidance: Some players felt that the tutorial was lacking and did not adequately prepare them for the complexities of the game.
- Meaningful Choices: Critics mentioned that the political choices and their impacts felt superficial compared to the moral dilemmas presented in the first game.
In summary, while Frostpunk 2 has been praised for its visuals, expanded mechanics, and complexity, it has also faced criticism for losing the intimacy and emotional weight of the original game, along with various gameplay and performance issues.

Frostpunk 2 Description
Frostpunk 2 is a real-time strategy game made by Polish studio 11 bit, also responsible for the warmly received This War of Mine. It is a continuation of the game Frostpunk from 2018. The player once again takes on the role of the manager of New London, one of the last bastions of humanity after the frosty apocalypse.
Realities and story
The action of the sequel takes place in 1917, thirty years after the end of the first game. The world has been frozen in ice by an unexplained climatic catastrophe, forcing humanity to fight for survival. The few people left created cities and settlements around generators, huge structures that burn coal and produce heat. One of these cities was New London - a settlement that managed to survive resource shortages, human conflicts, and a cataclysm called the Great Storm.
After three decades New London became a prosperous city. Unfortunately, residents encounter a new problem. The raw material they have relied on for years – coal – is no longer sufficient to provide heat for the entire city. Hope lies in the underground oil deposits, which settlers are beginning to exploit. People's uncertainty about the potential of oil, frequent crimes, nomads camping on the outskirts of the city, and the approaching waves of frost cause social unrest and distrust towards the authorities. Our task is to alleviate this difficult situation, ensure the safety of the city's residents and prevent the government from being overthrown by angry citizens.
Gameplay
In terms of gameplay, Frostpunk 2 is an evolution of the original. The core remains the same, although the scale of the events presented has increased. We are dealing with a real-time strategy game in which we expand the city and take care of the needs of the citizens. Oil takes the place of coal, the extraction of which is our highest priority. If it runs out, the generator in the city center will shut down, and the residents will have no protection against the cold. We must construct mining outposts, buildings that produce food, hospitals that treat sick citizens, and houses where people can rest after a hard day's work.
Frostpunk 2, like its predecessor, places great emphasis on difficult moral choices. We will often have to abandon our morality in the name of survival. It is crucial to find a balance between pragmatism and idealism. Otherwise we will face the downfall of the city or their own rule. Our decisions have consequences and impact on the fate of New London. During the game, we interact with many factions, whose agendas mutually exclude each other. Depending on the group we support, the game plays out differently.
Game modes
Similar to its predecessor, Frostpunk 2 only includes a single-player mode.
Music
Piotr Musial is once again responsible for the soundtrack - his work is known from the first part of Frostpunk, This War of Mine and the expansion Blood and Wine for The Witcher 3.
Game Pass
Frostpunk 2 was made available on PC Game Pass upon the game's release on personal computers.
